Corn Oil and Cancer: Reality Strikes Again

The benefits of corn oil keep rolling in. In a new study by Stephen Freedland's group at Duke, feeding mice a diet rich in butter and lard didn't promote the growth of transplanted human prostate cancer cells any more than a low-fat diet (1).

Why do we care? Because other studies, including one from the same investigators, show that corn oil and other industrial seed oils strongly promote prostate cancer cell growth and increase mortality in similar models (2, 3).

From the discussion section:
Current results combined with our prior results suggest that lowering the fat content of a primarily saturated fat diet offers little survival benefit in an intact or castrated LAPC-4 xenograft model. In contrast to the findings when omega-6 fats are used, these results raise the possibility that fat type may be as important as fat amount or perhaps even more important.
The authors seem somewhat surprised and pained by the result. Kudos for publishing it. However, there's nothing to be surprised about. There's a large body of evidence implicating excess omega-6 fat in a number of cancer models. Reducing omega-6 to below 4% of calories has a dramatic effect on cancer incidence and progression*. In fact, there have even been several experiments showing that butter and other animal fats promote cancer growth to a lesser degree than margarine and omega-6-rich seed oils. I discussed that here.

I do have one gripe with the study. They refer to the diet as "saturated fat based". That's inaccurate terminology. I see it constantly in the diet-health literature. If it were coconut oil, then maybe I could excuse it, because coconut fat is 93% saturated. But this diet was made of lard and butter, the combination of which is probably about half saturated. The term "animal fat" or "low-omega-6 fat" would have been more accurate. At least they listed the diet composition. Many studies don't even bother, leaving it to the reader to decide what they mean by "saturated fat".

* The average American eats 7-8% omega-6 by calories. This means it will be difficult to see a relationship between omega-6 intake and cancer (or heart disease, or most things) in observational studies in the US or other industrial nations, because we virtually all eat more than 4% of calories as omega-6. Until the 20th century, omega-6 intake was below 4%, and usually closer to 2%, in most traditional societies. That's where it remains in contemporary traditional societies unaffected by industrial food habits, such as Kitava. Our current omega-6 intake is outside the evolutionary norm.

Pancreatic Cancer Symptoms, Causes, Risk Factors, Treatment

Pancreatic cancer is a deadly disease with poor survival rates. Pancreas is located in the abdomen. Pancreas secretes one of the important hormones of the body. It is more common in males than females and in blacks than in whites.
Pancreas is anatomically divided into 3 parts which are head, body and tail. Greater than 70% of the pancreatic cancers occur in the pancreatic head, 20% in the pancreatic body and the remaining in pancreatic tail.
Pancreatic cancer Symptoms Signs:-
(1) Pain in the upper abdomen that is usually relieved when the patient leans forward.
(2) Loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting.
(3) Weight loss and jaundice which is usually accompanied by dark urine.
Pancreatic cancer Causes Risk Factors:-
The cause of this cancer remains unknown. The most established risk factor for the development of this cancer is cigarette smoking. Other less common risk factors are:
A high fat diet
Diabetes
Chronic pancreatitis, generally related to high alcohol intake
Workers in contact with organic chemicals
Pancreatic Cancer Natural Treatment Cures Home Remedies:-
(1) Radiation therapy is a method of treating cancer by allowing high energy x-rays to pass through the cancer cells and thereby sealing the growth of deadly cancer cells.
(2) Green Tea is one the best remedies for this cancer type.
(3) Chemotherapy is the use of certain drugs to try to kill cancer cells.

Top 5 Cancer-Causing Foods

Great list of Top 5 Cancer-Causing Foods that we should refrain from eating to keep us cancer-free and enjoy a healthy life.

1. Hot Dogs
Because they are high in nitrates, the Cancer Prevention Coalition advises that children eat no more than 12 hot dogs a month. If you can't live without hot dogs, buy those made without sodium nitrate..

2. Processed Meats and Bacon
Also high in the same sodium nitrates found in hot dogs, bacon, and other processed meats raise the risk of heart disease. The saturated fat in bacon also contributes to cancer.

3. Doughnuts
Doughnuts are cancer-causing double trouble. First, they are made with white flour, sugar, and hydrogenated oils, then fried at high temperatures. Doughnuts, says Adams , may be the worst food you can possibly eat to raise your risk of cancer.

4. French Fries
Like doughnuts, French fries are made with hydrogenated oils and then fried at high temperatures. They also contain cancer- causing acryl amides which occur during the frying process. They should be called cancer fries, not French fries, said Adams ..

5. Chips, Crackers and Cookies
All are usually made with white flour and sugar. Even the ones whose labels claim to be free of trans-fats generally contain small amounts of trans-fats.

Exercise May Prevent or Reverse Cancer

There is an increasing body of research evidence to suggest that many cases of cancer can be prevented through an alkaline lifestyle and diet. Indeed, even conservative estimates suggest that more than 60 percent of new cancer cases could be prevented simply by abstaining from unhealthy acidic lifestyle and dietary habits.

(I have suggested that 98 percent of all cancerous conditions are preventable with rigorous alkaline lifestyle and diet changes.)

Given that, in the best case, modern cancer treatments result in the long-term survival of only about 10 percent of all cancer patients, and that the survival rate for many of the most lethal cancers still remains far more dismal, an ounce of cancer prevention is certainly worth much more than a pound of so-called cancer cure. (This simple yet profound realization is the central theme of The pH Miracle for Cancer CD's.

http://www.phmiracleliving.com/p-253-the-ph-miracle-for-cancer.aspx

While not every case of cancer can be reversed through and alkaline lifestyle and diet regime, many of the terrible, and ultimately fatal, cancer cases might have been prevented with reasonably moderate alkaline alterations in the way that people choose to live their daily lives.

Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer that occurs in men, and the second most common cause of cancer death in men. In 2009, an estimated 192,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed, and approximately 27,000 men will die of this acidic dis-ease. Prostate cancer currently afflicts 1 out of every 6 American men, and accounts for 25 percent of all cancer diagnoses in men (similar, I might add, to the percentage of breast cancer cases among all cancer cases diagnosed in women). Most prostate cancers are stimulated by the hormone acids testosterone and other androgens produced by the testes, and by other tissues in the body.

The relationship between prostate cancer risk and exercise has not been entirely clear, thus far, as various clinical studies have produced contradictory findings. Some of these studies have suggested that high levels of daily physical activity may reduce the risk of prostate cancer, while other studies have not confirmed a link between prostate cancer risk and physical activity levels.

A new prospective public health study, just published in the British Journal of Cancer, adds further important evidence that increased levels of physical activity may indeed reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer. In this newly published study, nearly 46,000 men between the ages of 45 and 70 years were prospectively followed between 1998 and 2007. All of these male volunteers completed extensive questionnaires regarding their daily levels of physical activities at 30 years of age and at 50 years of age, as well as at the time or their entry into this clinical study.

These questionnaires specifically included questions regarding walking or bicycling; current waist, hip and height measurements; education level; cigarette smoking; alcohol consumption; diabetes; family history of prostate cancer; and other lifestyle factors. Six predefined activity levels for occupational activity (from “mostly sitting down” to “heavy manual labor”), and additional predefined categories for time spent on different activities, were specifically included in the questionnaire, such as walking or bicycling (“hardly ever” to “more than 90 min per day”), home or household work (“less than 1 hour per day” to “more than 8 hours per day”), inactive leisure time (“from 2 hours per day or less” to “5 hours per day or more”), and active leisure-time exercising (“from less than 1 hour per week” to “more than 5 hours per week”). The patient volunteers were also queried regarding the average number of hours per day they spent sleeping.

When the men who engaged in physical activity at the highest levels were compared with those at the lowest levels, some very important differences in prostate cancer risk emerged. Overall, very high levels of physical activity were associated with a 16 percent reduction in the risk of developing prostate cancer.

Why? Because exercise removes dietary and/or metabolic acids out of the tissues. And, keep in mind that acid is the cause for all cancerous conditions.

Additionally, among the men who spent at least half of their work days being physically active, the risk of prostate cancer was 20 percent lower when compared to men who spent most of their work day sitting down. Specifically, and very importantly, there appeared to be a linear and progressive decrease in prostate cancer risk with each additional 30 minutes of walking or bicycling per day over the course of the adult lifetimes of these men (this linear relationship was noted within a range of 30 to 120 minutes of walking or bicycling per day). Additionally, the risk of developing advanced prostate cancer appeared to be further lessened by regular daily physical activity which once again removes the acid that will cause cancer.

Cardiovascular disease remains the most common cause of premature death in most societies. Cancer is the No. 2 cause of premature death when including people of all ages, and the No. 1 cause of premature death below the age of 80 in the United States. Regular exercise, including relatively moderate activities such as brisk walking or bicycling, have been shown to significantly reduce the risk of death due to cardiovascular disease, as well as, increasingly, the risk of developing or dying from multiple different types of cancer. Based upon the results of this well-designed and well-executed prospective clinical research study, it would appear that prostate cancer can be added to the list of life-threatening illnesses for which the risk can be decreased through regular and frequent physical activity (and both at work and at home).

Pap Smear: Very Helpful For Detecting The Abnormalities In Cervix!

Have you ever undergone a pap smear? Pap smear test is extremely effective in detecting the cancerous cells present in your cervix and it is very essential in the prevention of cervical cancer.

Detecting the presence of cancerous cells in your body in early stages can be the first step in stopping the development of cervical cancer in your body.

It has been predicted that, almost 90% of the cervical cancer cases are prevented with the regular Pap smear test.

If you get regular pap smear test done, then the chance for getting cervical cancer in your body substantially decreases. Even if you get positive results for the development of cancerous cells, then the chances for curing the cervical cancer are as high as 90%, provided they are detected in early stages.

What is the right time to have pap smear test?

It is recommended that you can have your first pap smear at the age of 21 or about three years after having sexual relations and from then you need to follow these guidelines.
  • From 21-29 years of age, you need to have pap smear once in a year or for every two years, you can get it tested with liquid based pap test.
  • In between 30-69 years of age, for every two to three years, you should have three regular pap smear tests in a sequence.
  • From 70 years and older, you can stop having the pap test at this stage provided if you’ve had regular three normal pap tests in a row with normal results.
How ever, regardless of your age, if you have any of these mentioned risk factors, then it is very essential for you to undergo this test annually.
These are the most important situations at which you have to take pap smear. A regular health check up including pap smear can be very helpful for you in preventing all types of cancers.

Is Radiotherapy A Best Treatment For Bladder Cancer?

A wide range of treatment options are available for treating your bladder cancer such as surgical procedures, radiation therapy, biological therapy, chemotherapy, radio therapy, etc.

A recent study has found that the survival rates among all bladder cancer patients who are treated with radio therapy were as same as those who were treated with surgery to completely remove the bladder.

Important facts about radiotherapy:

Radiotherapy is used to treat cancer with the help of high energy rays, which are capable of destroying the cancer cells while doing comparatively as little harm as possible to your normal body cells. It is more often used for bladder cancer treatment as an alternative to surgery, which is necessary if the cancer comes back.

This kind of bladder cancer treatment is normally given for you in radiotherapy department as a sequence of short regular sessions.

Treating with radiotherapy doesn’t mean to remove your bladder, but you’ll need to have cystoscopy, usually for every 3 months or so in order to ensure that the bladder cancer has not come back.

This therapy for bladder cancer doesn’t make you radioactive and it is completely safe and harmless for you to be with other people including your children after the treatment.

Radiotherapy is not painful but you need to lie completely at rest without moving for few minutes when the treatment is being given to you.

Radiotherapy is involved with certain other health conditions!

Radiotherapy when given to treat the bladder cancer can irritate the bowel and can lead to diarrhea and also soreness around your anus.

Some times, it can also cause mild cystitis, which can cause a burning sensation when you pass urine or it can also lead to frequent urination. These effects gradually disappear with in few weeks after the treatment is completed.

Apart from these, certain other side effects which you can observe after having radio therapy include effects on your skin, ability to have erections (in men), narrowing of vagina (in women), tiredness etc.

Choosing a right option for bladder cancer treatment plays an important role in curing the disease. It becomes very important for you to know about various treatment options that exist in the treatment of bladder cancer [Cranberries to treat bladder infection].

So, try to consult any bladder cancer specialist or urologist for second option and get better and safe treatment for your bladder cancer.

Breast Cancer Prevention

With the news of Kylie Minogue’s breast cancer, women worldwide have been concerned for their health. Breast cancer has been on the increase over recent years. However it is commonly known that rates of breast cancer are minimal in women living in China. When they move to the United States and switch diets their risk of developing breast cancer becomes the same and US women.  40,000 women are diagnosed with beast cancer every year.Eight out of ten women who have breast cancer are women who have gone through the menopause.

The Breakthrough Generations Study was launched last year which will be investigating how diet, lifestyle and childbirth has on the disease. This study should also look into how the depletion of minerals from our diets over the past two decades enables the disease.

Acid – Alkaline and Protein Diets

Cancer thrives in acidic environments and dies in alkaline ones. Cancer cells have been shown to live indefinitely in acidic solutions.  Fresh tartrate fruit juice from lemons, limes and grapefruit have an alkalising effect on the blood. Wheatgrass juice has the most powerful alkalising effect on the body.

Cancer cells thrive in anaerobic (oxygen lacking) environments so exercising regularly is a very good preventative measure in keeping the body healthy. If human beings were designed just to eat protein, put very simply, we would digest ourselves. Our alimentary canal is 24 feet long to digest vegetable matter. Additionally much of the protein eaten by people on such high protein diets is pork that has been treated by nitrates. Eliminating salt is very helpful as is contributes to the death of a cancer cell by reducing its anti-polarity.

Isoflavones - Nature Oestrogen

Isoflavones ( genistein, daidzein, formononetin, biochanin A and glycitein) are plant hormones that have a similar structure to human oestrogen’s but which are five hundred to one thousand times less active at oestrogen receptors sites in the body. They have a number of important, beneficial physiological effects and can dampen down high oestrogen states, by competing for the stronger natural oestrogen’s at oestrogen receptors. One of the main dietary sources of isoflavones is soya, which is rich in daidzein, genistein and glycitein. Sixty grams of soy protein provides 45 mg isoflavones.

In the Japanese language there is no word to describe menopause because there is no bad effects from menopause in their culture due to the high level of soya products that they consume. The Japanese intake of isoflavones is 50 to 100mg per day – compared with typical western intakes of just 2 – 5 mg isoflavones per day. Blood levels of phytoestrogens in Japan are therefore as much as 110 times higher than those typically found in the West.

Apricot Kernals - Vitamin B17

Apricot kernels are, like most nuts and seeds, very nutritious. Among the nutrients they contain is one called amygdalin, which is also known as vitamin B17. Scientific research has proven that this attacks cancer cells, and thus can help prevent cancer from breaking out in our bodies. Amygdalin (vitamin B17) is contained in many hundreds of foods, but ones that are particularly rich in amygdalin have disappeared to a large extent from our Western diet. Peoples throughout the world who still eat a traditional diet, have been found to be largely free from cancer. These diets are rich in foods containing amygdalin.

Amygdalin is less toxic than salt and sugar. Amygdalin comes alongside the immune system and attacks the cancer cells directly. The cancer cells have within them an enzyme which unlocks the cancer poison in the amygdalin, and in this way the cancer cells are destroyed. Normal, healthy cells do not have this enzyme and are not affected. In fact they have a different enzyme which unlocks the amygdalin in a different way and releases nutrients. Vitamin 17 breaks down after this reaction into vitamin B12 which benefits your nervous system. You should only eat five a day.  Scientists at London’s Imperial College are working on ADEPT therapy in which they use cyanide to successfully kill tumour cells.

Breast Cancer Gene Therapy - How Does It Work?

Scientists have begun to explore gene therapy as a potential candidate for breast cancer treatments. To give you a clue of what cancer gene therapy is, it's basically programming cancer cells by supplying genes. The genes enter the cancerous cells and have a direct effect on changing the malign cell behaviour.

The therapeutic genes as they are called are delivered to cancerous cells via vectors (or carrier vehicles). Think of them as command delivery officers, who reprogram the bad cells. They basically deliver therapeutic healthy genes to cancerous cells. This is as close to curing the cause of the malign tumour as modern medicine can get.

However, the greatest constraint in gene therapy in general and for breast cancer as well is an optimal delivery vector. There is extensive research seeking to optimize therapeutic gene delivery to cancerous cells combined with other available therapies. It is hoped that gene therapy will limit the toxic side effects for the patient undergoing other treatments.

The future of gene therapy is limitless, but the question is what can be applied nowdays. Either when used in conjunction with another or as a sole form of treatment it can already be applied today. The success rate percentage data is hard to find from good sources, but this therapy is definitely worth of your attention. Through gene therapy it is possible to explicitly target cancerous cells in the body and attempt to destroy them. Also, gene carriers will continuously travel in the blood to search cancer cells.

Genes play a central role in the breast cancer development. Statistics show that hereditary breast cancer makes up approximately 5% to 10% of all forms. Some scientists believe that gene therapy is the most effective means of treating this type of cancer and it may have better impact than any other available treatment.

How Resveratrol Helps to Fight Cancer

There are many claims that Resveratrol can assist the body to overcome cancer, but many people are still wary of such claims. After all hasn't science been searching for the all-important cure since research began into this fatal illness? One would certainly hope so! To discover that a potential cure may exist in every bottle of red wine has understandably raised hopes - and more than a few skeptical eyebrows.

However, there is more than enough scientific evidence to suggest that resveratrol can help prevent cancer and even has beneficial effects on existing cancerous cells. Let's examine the ways that resveratrol helps in fighting cancer.

There are a multitude of ways that resveratrol acts towards combatting cancer. Cancer growth in the human body takes place in 3 stages: initial manifestation; promotion; and eventual propagation. It has been found that resveratrol interupts all 3 stages. Scientists now agree that practically every mechanism of tumor growth and progression is inhibited by resveratrol.

Most cancers are caused and are propagated by genetic abnormalities in affected cells. Since resveratrol assists DNA in accurately producing healthy cells, even from damaged ones, this can explain why resveratrol can inhibit the promotion of cancer. Another welcome side-effect of this process is looking and feeling younger, as genetic cell abnormalities do not persist.

Resveratrol acts at the cellular level to promote healthy functioning of the mitochondria. These important little organelles are involved in cell regulation and coordination, and they also produce chemical energy. A boost in energy levels, as reported by many resveratrol users, can be beneficial in fighting cancer and also dealing with many of the harsh medical treatments of cancer, such as chemo.

As previously mentioned, the mitochondria are involved in many of the inter-communications (called signalling) within the bodies cells. It is known that poor cell signalling can lead to many diseases including cancer. Hence, by improving the operation of mitochondria, resveratrol can thus help the body to remain cancer-free.

It also significantly increases the bodies MnSOD which reduces "superoxide" levels. Superoxide can result in mitochondrial instability and can trigger free radical chain reactions, which in turn, can lead to cancer. Thus by lowering superoxide levels and promoting mitochodrial stability, the risks of cancer are reduced.

During the propagatation stage of cancer, it undergoes metastasis. Cancer metastasis is the means by which cancer spreads to other regions and organs via the blood and lymph. Resveratrol promotes cell destruction in malignant cells, while nurturing healthy ones. Thus cancerous cells are induced to die prematurely, limiting their impact on the body, and preventing cancer propagation by metastasis.

Furthermore resveratrol, like the well-known Acai Berry, is a polyphenol which produces the rich coloring of these popular compounds. Polyphenols behave as anti-oxidants, cleansing the body of many toxins and neutralizing cancer-causing free radicals.

So there are a multitude of ways in which resveratrol works to combat cancer. To date most of the investigations have been performed in the laboratory under controlled conditions. However, since resveratrol supplements are widely available today many people are enjoying the health benefits already. These people often claim increased energy levels, feeling and looking younger, as well as losing weight. Clearly these supplements are working well and are producing some astonishing results. But can they help to prevent cancer?

There are still many unanswered questions regarding resveratrol and cancer. It may be too early to have absolute proof that resveratrol supplements can reduce the risk of cancer. However it is worth considering that the Okinawans who enjoy resveratrol as part of their staple diet have the lowest cancer statistics in the world. Although there is some way to go until the cancer fighting benefits of supplements are proven, with the abundance of other health benefits associated with resveratrol there's really no good reason to wait to find out.

In general, cancer patient care

Statistics speak for themselves: more than 40% of Americans will be diagnosed with some form of cancer in their lives. Fortunately, advances in medical technology and understanding, we often can be an effective treatment for cancer. Nevertheless, in general, less successful in the care of mental and social needs of cancer patients. Cancer patients often need assistance in learning skills and knowledge to manage their disease. They and their loved ones, also need assistance to deal with emotional problems, find transportation and other resources and the fight against interruptions in the work, school and family life.

These unmet needs, could cause more suffering and the patient may prevent full payment of debt. In treating illness rather than the entire people, our health care system to ensure efficient and quality care.

The Institute of Medicine report, for the treatment of cancer patients of all: meeting mental health, [1] suggests the level of provision of psychosocial services at regular assistance biomédica.

This level of attention processes include:
  • Identify psychosocial health needs;
  • Connect patients and families to needed services;
  • Support them in managing the illness;
  • Coordinate the psychosocial and biomedical healthcare; and
  • Follow-up on care delivery to evaluate the effectiveness of the services.

Successful implementation of this plan, all stakeholders in the process - from cancer specialists for health insurers - must act independently and collectively.

That vision attention not only for patients with cancer, but for all people with the disease. Redefine care for all patients, we can help ensure high-quality medical care.

That is my opinion. I am Dr. Harvey Fine Berg, president of the Institute of Medicine.
