Depression was found to accelerate the reduction of cancer patients

The cause of depression patients with advanced cancer die sooner than they should, say scientists at the University of Liverpool.

In the six-month study of patients have been slow increase of 7% chance of dying, and this percentage increases, depending on the severity of depression. Depression is common in patients with advanced cancer and in a significant number of patients will continue.

The researchers studied the symptoms and mood in patients with screening method originally designed for mothers in the postpartum period, questions about the futility, sadness and subjective thoughts of suicide, raises questions about the symptoms and pain. Depression affects 29% of patients in the first selection and 54.5% of the surviving patients remained low eight weeks later.

Professor Marianne Lloyd-Williams School of Population, Community and Behavioral Sciences, said: "Previous studies have shown that stroke patients who were not low functions as well as other patients, and a higher risk of death - all patients who suffer now stroke, selected for depression, but this does not apply to patients at every stage of cancer.

"We know that the patient's psychological constitution affects their physical condition, but did not quite know why this is happening. We believe that if someone is depressed and lose their motivation, will live.

"Depression affects 25% of patients with advanced cancer, but at this stage, it is difficult to diagnose. Although patients with advanced cancer is clearly still very poor can be effective treatment for depression, but the first step in treatment Recognizing that the patient is depressed."

Professor Lloyd-Williams and his team were given 2.5 million pounds for further research in palliative care. Currently they are working on larger studies with more than 400 patients to determine what emotional and psychological problems that cancer patients better understand their needs mental health and ways to improve their basic medical care.
