"We found that young women having a miscarriage or an abortion were three times more likely to experience a drug or alcohol problem during their lifetime."

Mrs Dingle said the study on the effects for workers who can contribute more advice and support to women who lost a pregnancy.

"Also, health professionals involved in the care of young women with mental health problems need to take good pregnancy histories, as young women can have complex pregnancy histories involving births, miscarriages and abortions," she said.

A new scoring system IQ tests are useful for children with mental disabilities

Researchers are developing a procedure for more accurate capacity of children. Parents of children with mental disabilities, were disappointed with IQ tests, they said virtually nothing about their children in the long-term training opportunities. This is because the tests are conducted in accordance with the average performance of children without disabilities, so that the raw scores of many children with intellectual disabilities at a low level of output: as a rule, no.

"We send back these reports that don't tell parents anything about their child," explained David Hessl, associate professor of clinical psychiatry at the University of California Davis M.I.N.D. Institute.

Well, Hessle, and a team from the new system, points IQ tests, the number of children with fragile X syndrome, genetic disorder that causes mental retardation, including autism. His studies were in-line Springer in the journal Neuro-development disorders.

"If this new method becomes widely available, we will be able to tell parents something more useful and more accurately diagnose and treat young children who are learning disabled," said Hessl, a physician who cares for children with fragile X syndrome.

According to Hessler, "There are many differences in the performance of children with mental disabilities in IQ tests. IQ tests are frustrated by "lack of sensitivity, Hessle develop scoring method to assess the advantages and disadvantages of each child.

"I knew a more accurate estimation of the potential of these children would make a big difference in their lives," he said.

In collaboration with researchers from the MIND Institute and Stanford University, as well as statistics from the National University of Pennsylvania, the group came with the new standardized scores of 217 children with fragile X syndrome, IQ test.

"The new scores tell us more precisely how a child with fragile X syndrome deviates from the normal population in every sub-test area," Hessl said.

Treatment of fragile X syndrome depends on its manifestation in each of the behavioral therapy to medication. The widespread use of new skills at a higher level will be the doctors treat their patients.

Hessl concluded, "In the future, the publishers of IQ tests should include lower functioning individuals in their standardization studies. This might mean over-sampling those with intellectual disability in order to get more sensitivity, but it would help so many children."

Serious mental illness associated with increased risk of stillbirth and neonatal mortality

Mothers with severe mental illness are more likely to have children who are born dead or die within the first few months of studies published before the pressure in the Archives of disease in childhood (the fetus and newborn Edition). But the link between the cause of death and the death of a newborn will depend on the nature of mental illness of the mother, research shows.

Researchers studied the 1.45 million births and 7021 deaths over 25 years from 1973 to 1998 in Denmark to investigate links with severe mental illness.

Nevertheless, the chances of neonatal deaths and deaths from all causes were significantly higher in children whose mothers had been hospitalized for mental illness at any time prior to the birth of his son, that the mother has never acknowledged.

In total, 188 mothers of children died before birth were admitted primarily for schizophrenia and psychotic disorders, mood (affective) disorders such as manic depressive (bipolar disorder), and dependence on drugs or alcohol.

The risk of death from complications during childbirth were more than twice as high among mothers with drug or alcohol addiction.

Women with affective disorders are also more than twice higher than the birth of a child with congenital abnormalities, that he was killed.

Among the 6,646 children who died in the first months of life, 201 were born by mothers who had been hospitalized for mental illness at some time in their lives.

Women with schizophrenia are twice as likely that the baby died as a result of congenital anomaly shortly after childbirth compared with the general population.

Alcohol / drug abuse and emotional disorders were associated with doubling the risk of newborn death.

But for most causes of death, the risk of death or the death of a newborn is not for women with schizophrenia than for women with severe mental illness.

These results indicate that factors other than mental disorders is likely to be involved, the authors explain.

They may include a way of life, such as smoking and poor nutrition, poverty and lack of access to prenatal care, improving the chances of complications during childbirth, premature birth and low birth weight children.

Domestic violence is a growing problem for veterans

"The growing number of veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) increases the risk of domestic violence and its impact on families and children in communities in the United States," said Monica Mathieu, Ph.D., a veteran mental health experts and senior lecturer Department of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis. "Treatment of Domestic Violence is very different from post-traumatic stress disorder. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), psychiatric care and treatment of PTSD, but these services must be combined with the specialized agencies, domestic violence intervention program of enforcement and for veterans from participating in the aggression against the behavior of couples and families. "

Mathieu and Peter Hovmand, Ph.D., an expert of domestic violence and assistant professor of social work at the University of Washington, will combine their research interests, and we will work for the community to develop prevention strategies to combat this new problem Public Health.

"The increase in the incidence of cranial trauma and substance abuse in connection with post-traumatic stress disorder among veterans presented some unique problems for the community response to domestic violence," said Hovmand.

"The community response to domestic violence should be adapted to the growing number of veterans with PTSD. They are veterans with young families and older veterans with chronic mental disorders."

Even if the demographic structure of population changes, as a veteran of World War II veterans reach their 80's and 90-ies, youth and veterans of the completion of service in Iraq and Afghanistan, the number of living veterans in the United States military strikes. Current estimates indicate that there are 23,816,000 veterans.

Mathieu said that evidence-based psychological treatment programs can be a great resource for physicians to learn to recognize and treat symptoms of PTSD. Nevertheless, the identification of violent behavior among veterans with active symptoms of PTSD may be difficult and may require counseling and referral to domestic violence experts.

During the investigation, VA suggests that male veterans with PTSD in two to three times more likely than veterans without PTSD involved in intimate partner violence, and is likely to be included in the legal system.

"The community violence prevention agencies and services that are veterans of the treatment plan to cope with the aggression of conduct," said Hovmand.

"Veterans need to have multiple suppliers to coordinate assistance available to them, and each vendor is working on the treatment goal. Kommunalnogo coordinated response to this kind of law enforcement agencies, courts, social service agencies, community activists and advocates for women to address the problem of domestic violence. These efforts, the victim and offender accountability of security by promoting intercultural exchange and communication.

"Veteran's Day is an excellent reminder that we need to coordinate the services provided by VA and the community to ensure that our veterans and their families receive the services they need when they need it," Mathieu and Hovmand said.

Medical Assistant For Male ??

I have realize that here is in my country was not much male are take career as a medical assistant. If you are going to the hospital, mostly you will face with female nurse. Yeah, most of them are female. Perhaps female are more patience to the patient, cause they were born as female of course hahaha. But, now seems like male are get on to be a nurse too. I have seen few nurse male in a international hospital. Am I right called him nurse ? I don't know exactly what does term for male nurse. So forgive me if I am wrong.

I guess medical assistant school is almost like girl dormitory, with dominant 90% of female. Just like engineering study in a college which is dominant by male. So there will be awkward if you are different than most of them. I guess, that’s why not much male are interesting to be medical assistant, am I wrong ? Hey I’m just guessing here, please feel free if you have your own opinion, of course with no hurt feeling, okay. I’m just wondering, in era where female are lift up voice about independent and emancipation, so why male are afraid to take over female job too, and start to bawl emancipation too, hehehe.

Most children are drug-Americans

American children in approximately three times more likely to appoint psychotropic medications for children in Europe. A new study published in the BioMed Central open access journal Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Mental Health said that differences could be considered for the management of cultural practices and beliefs about the role of drugs on the emotional problems and behavioral problems.

Julie Zito led a group of researchers from the U.S., Germany and the Netherlands investigated that the recipe in the three countries. She said antidepressants and stimulants prevalence of three or more times higher in the U.S. than in the Netherlands and Germany, while the anti-psychotic prevalence was 1.5 to 2.2 times higher. "

The use of antidepressants Prozac, as well as stimulants like Ritalin in children has been under great controversy, and the study of quantitative differences in practice between the U.S. and Western Europe. The authors argue that the difference may be partly due to different classification systems for diagnosis, "the U.S. growth trend bipolar diagnosis in children and adolescents are not in line with European practice." The authors also noted the limitations of public spending in Europe, the largest number of child psychiatrists per capita in the United States and the use of two or more psychotropic drugs for one year in the U.S. children as a possible explanation.

Zito to the conclusion that "direct consumer advertising of drugs in the United States, it is also to address some differences. The increasing use of drugs in the U.S. also reflects the individualistic and activist therapeutic mentality in the U.S. medical culture."

Poor mental and sexual health predicted homosexuals' negative feelings about sexuality

University of Minnesota researchers published a study showing that the degree of internalized homonegativity (negative attitudes towards homosexuality) among gay men is that it predicts poor mental and sexual health - that homosexual.

The seminar on the prevention of HIV infection, 422 Midwestern gay and bisexual men completed a survey to assess the extent of their homosexuality, their degree of positive or negative attitudes towards homosexuality, as well as some mental and sexual health variables.

In all cases, homonegativity internal, rather than gay, predicted poor mental health (including increased depression) and the worst sexual health. The study appears in the September issue of homosexuality.

This study helps to debate whether or not gay is healthy, said Simon Rosser, Ph.D., Research Fellow at the School of Public Health and principal investigator on the study.

"This study represents a missing link in our understanding of the relationship between sexuality and health," he said. "This opens up new evidence that negative attitudes towards homosexuality, not homosexuality per se that are linked to poor mental and sexual health in the area of sexual minorities. On the contrary, positive attitude towards homosexuality is linked with improved mental health and sexual health."

For more than 150 years, scientists and educators have been discussing whether homosexuality is a disease, or if the company harm, homosexuality is not conducive to increasing rates of depression, drug abuse and HIV / STD epidemic in the study of gay men, Rosser said. The study will test both theories.

"In light of discussions in many religious denominations over homosexuality, and in the community about gay and civil rights, it is also the right time," said Rosser. "Especially the old advice to gay men in the fight, deny or minimize their homosexuality, probably only increased depression, more isolated, and poorer sexual health. The words, see homosexuality as a disease is not only inaccurate but also may be."

Reports bisexual community on the need to improve mental health services

New research findings, the Center for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) and Sherbourne Medical Center casts light on the mental health of bisexual people in Ontario are looking for in relation to the mental health problems in this group. Bisexuality, mental health and emotional well-being of research also found that the current services in the field of mental health is not appropriate to the needs of bisexual people.

Ontario entire project is estimated experiences of bisexual people based on three main determinants of health: social factors, including biphobia and stigma, interpersonal relations, including the LGBT community, the workplace and partners, and internal factors, including high - and personal struggles. The results showed that biphobia and social stereotypes about bisexuals have a negative impact on psychological health and well-being of people bisexual.

Although previous studies have shown that bisexual people often seek help from mental health problems that heterosexuals, many of those who expressed disappointment, it was suggested, if they interact with the health system.

"Spirituality people we interviewed believed that physicians and other providers have a clearer idea of the continuum of sexuality and gender," said Dr. Lori Ross, CAMH scientist with social justice and health research was carried out under the project. In addition, Ross said that flaws in the system may indicate the need for specialized clinical training. "Many participants said they believed that some countries have friendly therapists were uncomfortable dealing with certain mental health problems, while the inclusion of mental health physicians have no understanding of the specific problems faced by bisexual men."

While many of the respondents had positive experiences with friends Queer clinical report shows that inadequate understanding of Bisexuality is also on the Community. "Some doctors, including the LGBT community, it is difficult to understand, bisexual, as a healthy and legitimate sexual orientation," said Anna Travers, a former program manager LGBT services, health center Sherbourne. Several people suggested that the advertising Web site is necessary and services that are clinically and culturally competent services to customers in bisexuals. I am pleased to say that this is something that will soon be launched in Ontario Rainbow Health website "

The study examines these issues, together with other difficulties in connection with the stereotypes of Bisexuality and acceptance among friends, family and the public. Makes a series of proposals to create a more comprehensive and effective system of mental health care for bisexual people, including education for providers and the public, along with increased resources for mental health.

The results will be at the event on September 23, 2008 7-9 hours at the Sherbourne Medical Center (333 Sherbourne Street, Toronto).

In general, cancer patient care

Statistics speak for themselves: more than 40% of Americans will be diagnosed with some form of cancer in their lives. Fortunately, advances in medical technology and understanding, we often can be an effective treatment for cancer. Nevertheless, in general, less successful in the care of mental and social needs of cancer patients. Cancer patients often need assistance in learning skills and knowledge to manage their disease. They and their loved ones, also need assistance to deal with emotional problems, find transportation and other resources and the fight against interruptions in the work, school and family life.

These unmet needs, could cause more suffering and the patient may prevent full payment of debt. In treating illness rather than the entire people, our health care system to ensure efficient and quality care.

The Institute of Medicine report, for the treatment of cancer patients of all: meeting mental health, [1] suggests the level of provision of psychosocial services at regular assistance biomédica.

This level of attention processes include:
  • Identify psychosocial health needs;
  • Connect patients and families to needed services;
  • Support them in managing the illness;
  • Coordinate the psychosocial and biomedical healthcare; and
  • Follow-up on care delivery to evaluate the effectiveness of the services.

Successful implementation of this plan, all stakeholders in the process - from cancer specialists for health insurers - must act independently and collectively.

That vision attention not only for patients with cancer, but for all people with the disease. Redefine care for all patients, we can help ensure high-quality medical care.

That is my opinion. I am Dr. Harvey Fine Berg, president of the Institute of Medicine.

"People commit suicide attempts are often in emergency rooms. But in the low-middle income countries where there are no complications, patients are processed after the treatment of wounds without resorting to mental health services," says author Fleischmann.

"But to patients with the information and subsequent telephone calls from further attempts can be prevented and lives", said, Fleischmann.

Americans show little tolerance for mental illness, despite the growing confidence in the genetic causes

A new study from the University of Pennsylvania and professor of sociology Jason Schnittke shows that while most Americans believe that genetic causes of mental illness, the state is no longer tolerant of mentally ill than 10 years.

The study, published online in the journal Social Science and Medicine 2006, a copy of 1996 General Social Survey module psyche, for trends in religion in public about mental illness in the United States, in particular on public support for genetic reasons.

Before medical sociology studies show that public confidence about mental illness reflect the dominant treatment of mental disorders, the changing nature of media representations of mental illness and wisdom prevailing in the field of science and medicine.

Schnittke study, "insecurity revolution: Why is the emergence of a genetic model of mental illness no more tolerance", attempts to treat major tolerant attitude towards the mentally ill did not increase along with the growing popularity of biomedical look at its causes. His research finds that the various arguments are indeed becoming increasingly popular, but very different associations in connection with mental disorders are treated.

"In the case of schizophrenia, associated with genetic arguments about the violence," said Schnittke. "Indeed, nothing is explained schizophrenia genes impute bad character - how Americans see people with schizophrenia as" bad "in some significant way, and therefore likely to be violent. But if this depression, genetics arguments very different shades: they have relevant to social acceptability. If anyone imagine that depression genetic problems, the situation seems more genuine and less guilty: it is in their genes, not weak, it must take for them. "

Schnittke The study also shows that the arguments related to genetic treatment to recommend, but not relevant to the risk of improvement.

"While the stigmatization of people with mental illness do not decline in the proportion of treatment of psychiatric disorders has increased," wrote Schnittke. "Culture around the treatment of mental illness becomes focused and with direct access to consumer advertising of psychiatric drugs currently one of the pillars of popular media."

After Schnittke research, genetic arguments, in fact, increase state support for medical treatment, although they are not clearly related to improving the overall level of tolerance. We explain tolerance with regard to social distance: the reluctance to live next to the mentally ill, group homes for mentally ill people in the area to spend the night socializing with a mental patient, working in close contact with that person at work, friendship with someone with mental illness or mental illness marry within the family.

Physical and sexual abuse in connection with asthma in children in Puerto Rico

Children who were physically or sexually assaulted more than two times more likely to have asthma than their peers, according to a recent study of urban children in Puerto Rico. In fact, physical and sexual abuse was only from asthma in all maternal risk factors tests, including asthma and paternal socio-economic status.

"To our knowledge, this is the first report of a direct link between child abuse and asthma and asthma-related outcomes," wrote Robyn T. Cohen, MD, MPH, lead author of a document Channing Laboratory of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

Articles published the first edition of September American Journal of respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, published by the American Thoracic Society.

"We would like to know whether the effects of stress and violence associated with increased risk of asthma among children in urban areas live in Puerto Rico," said Principal Investigator, Juan C. Celedón, MD, Dr.PH "We know that is high prevalence of asthma among children in Puerto Rico, and many studies have linked stress and the impact of violence on health problems in children, such as asthma. "

Researchers surveyed parents and children to 1353 pairs from 2001 to 2003, and again polled almost 90 per cent of the same pair of two years after their first interview. They used a questionnaire to provide information on the verification of stress and violence in the world living children (where possible without the father present), and doctor diagnosed asthma, allergic rhinitis, asthma drug use and doctor visits for asthma and / or allergic rhinitis in Over the past year to assess children's asthma and allergies.

"Children with a history of abuse of all results of higher frequencies than those who had no history of abuse," says Dr. Cohen. "Adjusted for covariates, history of abuse associated with approximately twice the likelihood of current asthma, the use of medical care for asthma and allergies." For example, while 15 (20 percent) of 75 children with a history of abuse of current asthma, 128 (11.5 percent) from 1117 children left without a history of abuse of current asthma.

The study, however, found no connection between violence and asthma neighborhood, as other studies in the past. Researchers suggest that the discrepancy may be the result of the fact that "it's just the influence of stress, but also physiological reactions to stress predicts that the results of physical health."

Individual responses to stress, such as communal violence vary, and, after some data, the Puerto Rican culture itself may have a protective function. "Places of Latino culture, emphasizing certain social values and supports mitigate the effects of poverty and violence against children in Puerto Rico," said Dr. Cohen. Direct physical or sexual violence, but could lead to the breakdown of the buffer.

Researchers postulated that the abuse hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) - axis, which, in turn, can express the reaction of glucocorticoids, which reduced the suppression of inflammatory reactions of the respiratory tract. Other studies have that opportunity, especially in patients with PTSD.

But while the exact route remains uncertain, and beyond cross-sectional study has not yet been proven, the results have direct relevance for social workers and doctors: "Our results underscore the importance that both tests detect diseases such as asthma in children who are abused and aware of the possibility of abuse in children with asthma, "says Dr. Cohen.

This in itself NewsBrief el Pasco article in the American Thoracic Society peer-reviewed, American Journal Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

Tyre girls in early puberty is associated with behaviour problems, crime and substance, according to background information in the article. Many of these problems through adolescence and early adulthood. "As adults, early maturing girls demonstrate academic and professional report on the progress and quality of life and reduction of satisfaction," the authors write. "That is why it is important to understand that the protective factors can the negative effects of early-maturing girls" Adaptation. "

Sylvie Mrug, Ph.D., University of Alabama at Birmingham, and her colleagues surveyed 330 grade girls (average age 11), as well as their parents of the three urban areas. Girls reported how often they are in aggressive behavior, for example, hitting, teasing and spread rumors to harm the other, whether displayed with crime (fighting at school, suffered in the fight or to cause injury), the frequency of their loving mother and how often they did things together, regardless of whether their parents with them about violence, sex and snuff tobacco, and if they began their time. Parents responded to seven points measure the degree that they knew that their children, friends and how he or she had spent their free time.

Girls mature earlier quarter, defined as the beginning of his term in office a year ago, the average age for women from racial and ethnic backgrounds. Those who can not lead to the criminals, but not aggressively. But those are ripe at the beginning and also has a low level of parental care, communication and knowledge is likely to be aggressive. "In addition, early maturing predict only physical aggression, coupled with low maternal care," write the authors.

In early maturing girls may be at greater risk of aggression or crimes because they are more likely to be adopted and relationships with older men are more likely than younger children to engage in undesirable behavior, the authors note. "Popecheniya parents can reduce girls' vulnerability to the negative influence of peers," they write. "In addition, parental care can help girls cope with the problems associated with early puberty. As I listened to their daughters' difficulties and support and encourage, foster parents can help develop more effective survival skills and diffuse the negative emotions that can manifest itself as an aggression" .

Parents of communication and knowledge can protect girls from aggressive behaviour continue. "Given the difficult situation in pairs (for example, provocation," peer pressure) and ways to combat them, parents can help their daughters develop a repertoire of adaptive responses to a minimum, you need to be inadequate (and say aggressive) behavior, "they they wrote. " Furthermore, in order to know how their daughter spend their free time, parents can help identify and prevent negative peer and other influences. "

The impact on the mental health of girls, where serious setbacks in school

Adolescent girls have been serious violations of the scale of 12 - be expelled, suspended or abandonment - were significantly more likely to suffer serious consequence of depression before the age of 21 than girls do not have these problems.

New research results published in this week's Journal of Adolescent Health shows that girls who had behavioural problems at the beginning in primary schools were also an increased risk of depression in early adulthood. However, the University of Washington study showed no link between male academic, behavioural or social problems and depression before the age of 21

"For girls have more serious consequences of school failure," said Carolyn McCarty, UW-researcher, professor of pediatrics and lead author of the study. "We already know that leads to more poverty, higher levels of public support falling prices and employment stability. And now, this study shows that its impact on the mental health of girls."

The study showed that girls who were expelled from school, more than twice as often suffer from depression - 44 percent, compared with 20 per cent of girls were not expelled. Dreiunddreißig per cent of girls drop out of school later than low, compared with 19 percent, not dropouts. Twenty-eight percent of girls were suspended and then suffer from depression, compared with 19 percent of girls who were not suspended.

Overall, 45 per cent of girls and 68 per cent of men in the study of major setbacks in school, but McCarty said that these figures are not surprising, because the study participants were high-crime neighborhoods. Nevertheless, the level of depression among girls was 22 per cent compared with 17 percent of men.

"The paradox of sex shows that during school failure is very unusual for girls seemed to have more serious consequences if it happens," said, McCarty. "One reason could be that stigmatizes schoolgirls harder and more difficult to overcome. We know that girls with behavioural disorders, such as failure in school tend to have problems associated with long-term impact on Cascade."

He said a comprehensive study of men and women in depression, prices are comparable to previous studies, although 17 per cent of males the figure was slightly high.

Data for the study was taken from the current UW Seattle social development research project started in 1985 and supervises 808 people, as reflected in the fifth grade. Students from 18 schools in Seattle high-crime neighborhoods to study the development of positive and antisocial behaviour. Participants were divided almost equally by sex and identified themselves as white (46 percent), black (24 percent), Asia and America (21 percent), native American (6 percent) and other groups (3 percent).

McCarty said the study shows the need to create an integrated community-based prevention programmes to help children cope with academic, social and behavioural disorders.

"As teenagers have similar problems and experiences, respond tend to concentrate solely on academics, partly because the school and mental health are different. We need to look more generally into operation and see what happens with other aspects of their Life, including psychological. We can not be a Band-aid on what seems to be a problem, because often there are more fundamental problem that must be addressed, "he said.

"If the school failures and resources must be ready to intervene at this time to prevent depression later," said McCarty, director, is a middle school study is that assessment in early preventive measures to prevent depression. "The social and emotional skills are crucial for young people and may or may not be taught in schools and parents. We have a school-based prevention programmes before the problem could be much larger and more difficult to solve."
